consolidating photographic work proposing optimum selection
Jean-Christophe Béchet — Workshop

Point Centre for Contemporary Art

Megaro Hadjisavva, 2,
Evagorou Avenue, 1097

Tel.: +357 22 66 20 53

During the session Jean-Christophe Béchet will refer to examples from books or photographic series, as he has a rich professional experience – he has edited twenty books and curated more than 50 exhibition.

The workshop will be based on portfolio reviewing, which will take place throughout the day; each participant will have about 15 minutes to present his/her work (preferably prints in order to give a hands-on editing approach of the portfolio).  All participants will also be welcomed to express their point of view on the different portfolios as this is also considered part of the learning procedure.

The goal is to explain that photography is a process which includes various stages and that editing is as important as the choice of the subject matter and the production of the photos. Of course the focus will always be oriented towards the result, whether that is an exhibition, a book or a multimedia projection – and every type of presentation entails a different mind-set and reflection in order for one to make the relevant selections.

Jean-Christophe Béchet searches for the best “tool” in every single project, the one that will allow him to have an insightful dialogue, an interpretation of the real and a photographic subject. Heir of the “street photography”, that can take place in America, France or Japan, he has chosen not to abandon the field of the “subjective document”, bringing together documentary and landscape, portrait and architecture. Distrustful of the fixed sets, he looks to reveal a photographic testimonial in every project

Born in 1964 in Marseille, Jean-Christophe Béchet lives and works in Paris since 1990. He studied economics (Aix-en-Provence, 1982-1985), and after that photography (Arles, 1985-1988) before travelling for two years in West Africa (1988-1990).

The individual’s place in the contemporary scenery, urban and natural, are at the center of his preoccupations. At the moment, he continues to work in the big cities of Europe, Asia and America and he also, develops a lot of series in the territories of the Haute Montagne. He has shown his work in many exhibitions and in more than twenty books. He is represented by Gallery « Les Douches la Galerie » (Paris, 10ème).
