ELINA JULIN (born 1979) I am visual artist working mainly with photography. I live and work
in Helsinki, Finland. As an artist I am interested in basic element of an image and specifically
light. Light has been both material and the motif in my works. Light is unpredictable, fleeting,
tangible and vital. Photography is particularly suited to my mobile and changing way of
working. My work often deals with the interface between photography and painting. I am not
photographing certain subjects but landscape and nature can be seen as themes in my works. I
graduated both with BA in Visual Arts in 2005 and MA in Photography in 2010 from Aalto
University School of Art and Design in Helsinki Finland.
Invisible Light series Lately I have worked with cameraless photography techniques. It gives me
the way to work straight with the light itself that has an important role in my working process. I
continue searching for more tangible feeling as a result of layers, using both analog and digital
processes. This derives from my yearning for the physicality of painting. Though my interest is
in the immateriality of light and in its contact to reality. Invisible Light series deals with the
themes of presence, transiency and momentariness. Working process is tied strongly to weather
conditions and surrounding environment. Spontaneity and result of findings are part of the work.
