This work is a cartography of National One Road, created in the Portuguese National Road Plan of 1945. Linking the two main Portuguese cities, Lisbon and Porto, it was for several decades the busiest national road.
Its material heritage also reveals conflicting and diffuse models of development, in a Portugal marked by the desire for modernity but systematically inhibited by the dictatorial "Estado Novo". Nevertheless, it is now a crucial and intriguing place of passage, since it houses a very specific and peculiar memory of a disorganized and hesitant Portugal, between the urban and the rural, the sophisticated and the traditional.
